Refittings

Makai when purchased was in relatively "good shape". However, the following refit was required to -upgrade- this little vessel from lobster style workboat to "lobster yacht" status. Thus, extensive refitting, repair, rebuilding, and various upgrades were performed on Makai by myself from mid August 2001 thru late October 2001. Below is a detailed accounting of that work.

Hull:
  • All bottom paint removed via double sanding.
  • All voids in fiberglass repaired with Marine-Tex & sanded.
  • Hull sealed with 3 coats of Petit Protect Barrier Coat 2 part epoxy.
  • Hull painted with 2 coats Petit Ultima S/R black bottom paint.
  • 1" Red boot strip added.
  • New graphics made & applied for Reg. numbers on topsides
  • New graphic made & applied for stern name.
  • Topsides sanded, repaired, & repainted.
  • Repair & encapsulation of port topside strake railing which was originally secured with incorrectly with galvanized bolts, now rusting. Rail was sealed into black 5200 sealant to inhibit rust streaks on hull, pending replacement at a future date.
  • Stern sanded, repaired, & repainted.
Transom Locker Area:
  • Four 6" cut outs made in locker storage decks for access to sub-floor areas inside of transom locker (2 holes each side).
  • Two - 1/2" emergency drain holes added to aft storage locker w/ 1/2" neoprene plugs.
  • Locker floors & walls repainted and sealed.
  • Opening of Transom Locker repaired & rebuilt w/West System Epoxy.
  • New secondary bilge pump add in stern: Atwood 500 Guardian model located in extreme sub-bilge w/thru hull fittings from sub-floor and exiting topside.
  • Two 3.5" louvered vents holes added to forward vertical surface of transom locker.
  • Two white Nicro 3" cowl vents added to top surface of transom locker (fantail area).
  • Two new 4'"deck plates screw out tops added to sub-bilge access points in transom locker.
Cockpit:
  • Two new emergency 7/8" cockpit deck drains to sub-bilge added with neoprene snap plugs and brass sleeves.
  • Large black storage locker added w/custom made struts for attachment to aft pilothouse wall.
  • Starboard gas tank removed, sending unit replaced.
  • Port and Starboard gas tank access panels reworked and replaced for easier access to tanks.
  • Securing blocks for tanks rebuilt to allow for expansion and run out of drain water.
  • Gas vent lines redone for proper venting and prohibiting of salt water intake from extenal vents on topsides.
  • New plugs for all scuppers.
  • Corners of aft cockpit rebuilt with epoxy ledges to encourage proper drainage of rainwater to exit scuppers.
Canvas:
  • New 4' x beam bimini on 1" s/s frame with boot (fully retractable to pilothouse.
  • New 4' x 4' starboard roll-up side panel for pilothouse w/windows and window covers.
  • New 2.5' x 6.5' zip open/roll up aft pilothouse door w/window cover.
  • New 2' x 2' forward hatch cover.
  • New outboard motor cover.
Pilothouse:
  • Repair of roof holes were small leaks were found.
  • Resealing of roof seams.
  • Repainting of roof seams.
  • Complete removal, resealing, and replacement of two port side pilothouse windows where water migration was entering side panel.
  • Two new 30" high folding director chairs added.
  • Special attachment strut added to aft pilothouse wall for securing folded director chairs - when not in use.
  • Various brass hooks added.
Accessories:
  • New 4" brass ship's bell added to aft pilothouse wall.
  • New 4" ship's clock added to pilothouse.
  • New Uniden VHF radio added to pilothouse.
  • New wiper arms and blades (all three forward windows).
  • New support arm for starboard opening windshield window in pilothouse.
  • New s/s trumpet style horn mounted atop pilothouse.
  • Horn wired and h/d horn button added to instrument panel.
  • New PA speaker added to pilothouse roof, connected to VHF for hailing.
  • New 4' VHF Antenna.
  • New U.S. Jack Bow Flag on teak 18" staff with s/s base added.
  • New 3" s/s cowl ventilator added on top port side of cuddy cabin, removable - with deck plate.
  • New 3" solar powered s/s Nicro vent added with hosing direct to sub-bilge through 4" deck plate in sub-bilge floor with adapter for professional connection.
  • Additional 4" opening deck plate added in forward cabin locker #2 for sub-bilge inspection and ventilation.
  • 3.5" louvered vertical ventilation holes added in forward cabin lockers #2 & #4.
  • New class 3 fire extinguisher.
  • Four new black & white taylor fenders.
  • New black nylon 1/2" dock lines.
Electrical:
  • AC shore wiring system added to pilothouse and cabin.
  • New AC shore power connection fitting
  • New AC shore power 50' cord set.
  • New receptacles and junction box.
  • AC Rope light - lighting set added to pilothouse.
  • AC Rope light - light set added to cabin.
  • New bank of 6 switches mounted on instrument panel for proper power control of accessories.
  • New Battery Switch intalled.
  • New Batteries (1 Starting, 1 Deep Cycle: type 24s).
  • New Battery leads & wiring.
  • New Battery Boxes.
  • New DC wiring bus added.
  • New aft bilge pump wired to new selector switch at helm.
  • DC wiring rewired for cleaner routing.
  • DC 12 volt accessory socket added to instrument panel.
  • New DC Power On red indicator light added to instrument panel.
  • Repair of compass lamp lighting wiring and light.
  • New DC 0 ~ 16 voltage meter added to instrument cluster.
